In the same year, 1974, she appeared with Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese’s praised comedy drama the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. The performance brought Ladd an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress.

Subsequent Years

In the 1980s, she appeared in the dramatic film the movie Black Widow plus humorous film National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and also took part in Alice, a sitcom inspired by her earlier movie.

In the following decade, she earned another Oscar nomination for supporting actress nomination for her performance in the David Lynch film the movie Wild at Heart in which she portrayed the mother of her biological child Dern’s character. The next year she obtained an additional nod for her role in Rambling Rose that also featured her daughter.

“This movie which Princess Diana chose as her absolutely favorite, and she flew us to England for a premiere and a party dedicated to us,” Ladd shared about the film Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, grasping our hands, with tears, viewing our performance.”

That decade included parts in the comedy Cemetery Club bringing her back with her co-star Burstyn, the movie Primary Colors, a political comedy, featuring John Travolta and Payne’s Citizen Ruth where she played Laura Dern’s mom once more. That period also earned her Emmy nominations for roles in the series Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire, a sitcom plus Touched by an Angel.

Working with Laura Dern

She continued to star with her daughter in comedy drama the film Daddy and Them, the David Lynch project Inland Empire, a surreal film and White’s satirical show Enlightened. Filmmaking Ventures

She also authored and helmed the comedy film the movie Mrs Munck that included herself and ex-husband actor Bruce Dern. “Bruce is a talented star,” she mentioned. “It was a privilege to guide him in a film. Actually, I am the sole female in recorded history who directed her former husband. I make a joke: ‘I tell women, should you desire retribution, guide your former spouse.’ But I’m only kidding.”

Family Ties

She happened to be a relative of playwright Tennessee Williams, who she called “a great influence on my life”.

In 2018, doctors misdiagnosed Ladd with a pulmonary condition and advised she had just six months to live but made a full recovery once her daughter transferred her to another medical facility.

“Should you harness your suffering and prevent it from festering like an injury, instead use it to investigate, to make the path clearer for yourself and others, then you are succeeding,” Ladd said.
