Jailhouse Shock: The FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Life in Prison

He battled the legal system and justice won.

A couple of months following getting a quarter-century plus sentence for trying to “eradicate” the nation's political system, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro now looks destined for incarceration.

Imminent Incarceration

The found-guilty instigator – who has been living under residential detention in his estate while a number of legal procedures and challenges proceed – is largely predicted to be imprisoned in the next few days, amidst increasing talk that he will be moved to a infamous maximum security facility.

Previous Comments on Prisoners

During Bolsonaro’s 40-year political career, the conservative ex- soldier exhibited minimal sympathy for Brazil’s prison population.

“Why should we offer these lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They ought to simply be screwed, full-fucking-stop. That’s what I reckon.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to end up there, you simply need is not sexual assault, abduction or rob.”

Prison Facility Debate

But the prospect of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has horrified allies, several of whom this week visited the prison in an apparent attempt to dissuade the high court from transferring him there.

Senator Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was part of that quartet, claimed he anticipated the septuagenarian leader to be jailed in the following week and a half and was concerned his location could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s acute gut problems – the outcome of a almost deadly stabbing during the 2018 presidential election race – implied it would be risky to keep the former president there. “His [health] situation is highly critical. He cannot to manage if they send him to Papuda … It will be dreadful,” he added, who also worried about packed cells and the standard of inmate food.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas remembered seeing cells containing 40 detainees: “That is virtually one square metre per inmate.

“We talked to the convicts and they grumble, of course, of the terrible food,” continued the senator.

Allies Voice Concerns

The senator isn't the only voice speaking out before the one-time head of state's predicted incarceration.

Writing in a major publication, one more backer, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “severe” finale to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to experience “the greatest political injustice in its past”.

“It is an unfairness that gnaws the hearts of millions Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Mixed Popular Reaction

That may be true given the substantial backing Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. Yet his anticipated imprisonment has also warmed the hearts of numerous individuals who think he deserves to be incarcerated for plotting to prevent the incoming president from taking power – and also scheming to have him murdered.

Reimont Otoni, a representative for the incumbent administration's political party, said: “No one wants Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. No one desires Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We want him to obtain respectful care – but dignified handling in prison. He must not carry on being his own prison warden for his lifetime.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have spent years applauding the harsh treatment of inmates, had unexpectedly realized to their entitlements. “Just now has the far-right – which has always asserted that basic rights are not for lawbreakers – decided to visit a penitentiary to find out what circumstances are truly like,” he stated.

“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he earned “humiliating, demeaning conduct”.

Possible Incarceration Environment

In spite of speculation that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which now contains about 14,000 detainees, his more likely assigned facility appears to be a close jail for officers and other “special” prisoners referred to as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

The accommodations are far more adequate than those in the larger jail, although nevertheless a far cry from the opulence Bolsonaro had while living in the stunning presidential palace, around 12 miles away.

As per sources, the accommodation Bolsonaro could expect to occupy in Papudinha is about 24 sq metres – roughly the dimensions of two parking spaces – and contains a 12 sq metre WC with a water facility and a 12 square meter balcony. “He could be permitted to have a set and additionally a minibar in his quarters as long as they were supplied by his family,” the report indicated.
