Larry Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors

Board Resignation
Summers stated he would retreat from public positions after House committee released his repeated correspondence with Epstein

Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is leaving the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a collection of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became public.

He commented in a statement that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have contributed, optimistic about the prospects of the enterprise, and eagerly await following their development".

The former Harvard president, who previously headed Harvard University, stated on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his association with the convicted sex offender.

Digital Correspondence

The freshly disclosed emails demonstrated that Summers corresponded with Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 arrest for accused trafficking of minors.

In a separate statement, the AI firm said it understood his determination to resign.

"We appreciate his significant contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," the organization commented.

Political Context

This news comes after the two houses of the legislative branch voted on Tuesday to endorse a bill that would mandate the US justice department to make public its records on Jeffrey Epstein.

The measure will subsequently move to the administration of President Trump for approval. The President has said he plans to approve the legislation, after reversing his position on the matter following pushback from his supporters.

Message Details

A group of financier-linked correspondence disclosed by the House Oversight Committee recently included multiple high-profile figures in the Epstein's previous network, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those figures.

The communications indicated that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often seeking to introduce the academic to prominent global figures.

Personal Response

After the messages were shared with the public, he expressed he took "total ownership for my misguided choice to persist in corresponding with Mr Epstein".

He further stated that he wanted "to reestablish confidence and repair relationships with the individuals closest to me".

Career Background

The professor served in senior posts under party leaders; serving as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as leader of the National Economic Council under President Obama.

He led Harvard from five years and is still a academic there. When stating his withdrawal from public commitments earlier on this week, he said he would persist with his educational duties.

Additional Consequences

Following his announcement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a progressive policy institute in the capital where he was a researcher, verified that the economist was no longer connected with the organization.

He joined the directorate of the technology firm, which makes ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a defeated move to oust its top executive Sam Altman.
