The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode season written by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The last season concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers track the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of season six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the network announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
