The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.

An new acronym emerged several months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This term is specific to Gaza, per insights from health professionals like paediatricians. Normally, it is rare for doctors to care for a child who has seen the death of their whole family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary in scores of doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire

Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that violations are continuing. Officials rejects these claims, consistent with how it denies all charges it is implicated in. But while traumatised orphans are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its stated mission of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, it seems, is what global togetherness looks like.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from participating in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an effort to politicise Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that global media are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of a person in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A competition that once promoted harmony has devolved into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
