The State of Texas Top Legal Officer Sues Tylenol Manufacturers Regarding Autism Spectrum Allegations

Judicial Proceedings
The Texas Attorney General, a Trump ally campaigning for the United States Senate, accused the drug companies of hiding potential dangers of acetaminophen

Texas Attorney General Paxton is filing a lawsuit against the producers of Tylenol, asserting the firms hid alleged dangers that the pain reliever presented to pediatric cognitive development.

The lawsuit arrives a month after President Donald Trump promoted an unsubstantiated connection between consuming Tylenol - referred to as acetaminophen - during pregnancy and autism in young ones.

The attorney general is taking legal action against the pharmaceutical giant, which formerly manufactured the medication, the only pain reliever recommended for pregnant women, and Kenvue, which now manufacturers it.

In a declaration, he claimed they "betrayed America by making money from suffering and pushing pills regardless of the potential hazards."

Kenvue asserts there is lacking scientific proof linking Tylenol to autism.

"These companies misled for generations, deliberately risking countless individuals to boost earnings," Paxton, a Republican, stated.

Kenvue said in a statement that it was "very worried by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the security of paracetamol and the likely effects that could have on the health of women and children in America."

On its website, Kenvue also stated it had "regularly reviewed the pertinent research and there is insufficient valid information that demonstrates a proven link between using paracetamol and autism."

Groups acting on behalf of medical professionals and medical practitioners share this view.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has said paracetamol - the main ingredient in Tylenol - is among limited choices for expectant mothers to manage pain and fever, which can pose serious health risks if left untreated.

"In more than two decades of studies on the use of paracetamol in pregnancy, zero credible investigations has successfully concluded that the consumption of paracetamol in any stage of gestation causes brain development issues in children," the group stated.

This legal action mentions latest statements from the Trump administration in arguing the drug is potentially dangerous.

Recently, Trump caused concern from health experts when he told pregnant women to "fight like hell" not to take Tylenol when ill.

The US Food and Drug Administration then issued a notice that physicians should think about restricting the usage of Tylenol, while also mentioning that "a causal relationship" between the drug and autism in young ones has not been proven.

Health Secretary RFK Jr, who manages the Food and Drug Administration, had pledged in spring to initiate "a massive testing and research effort" that would establish the source of autism in a matter of months.

But authorities warned that discovering a sole reason of autism spectrum disorder - considered by experts to be the result of a complicated interplay of genetic and external influences - would not be simple.

Autism spectrum disorder is a category of lifelong neurodivergence and condition that impacts how individuals perceive and engage with the world, and is recognized using physician assessments.

In his lawsuit, the attorney general - a Trump ally who is seeking federal office - asserts the manufacturer and J&J "intentionally overlooked and sought to suppress the science" around acetaminophen and autism.

The lawsuit attempts to require the firms "destroy any commercial messaging" that claims acetaminophen is secure for women during pregnancy.

The Texas lawsuit parallels the concerns of a group of mothers and fathers of children with autism and ADHD who took legal action against the producers of acetaminophen in 2022.

The court threw out the case, stating studies from the parents' expert witnesses was not conclusive.
